Once considered a rather humdrum piece of personal protective equipment, this gained extraordinary desirability and value during a certain pandemic.

Ridiculous sums were paid from public coffers, to companies set up by government officials (and their friends/families), in a desperate time where it was felt that normal procurement protocols need not apply.

Disgraceful profiteering took place and a special place in hell should be reserved for those public servants who dipped their hands so deeply into the purse.
